Qualified Vets: Your instructor on Pet care

There are different kinds of veterinary practices
around. These include:
  • Small Animal Practices
  • Mixed animal Practices
  • Emergency Clinics
  • Exotic Clinics
  • Avian Clinics
  • Cat Only Clinics
  • Mobile Practices
All of these provide veterinarian advice and mixed animal practices are the most common types of vets. You can even get advice from an online vet where you can ask a vet a question before taking your pet to your local surgery.
Small animal practices
Small animal practices, unsurprisingly, specialize in the treatment of small animals such as cats, dogs, small rodents, birds and ferrets. These surgeries are the best places to register if you have a small pet as the vet will have special knowledge on your pet.
Mixed Animals Practices
Mixed animal practices are the most common types of veterinary surgeries. They are often found in rural areas as they work with bigger animals such as horses, cattle, sheep and pigs. They do treat small animals.
Emergency Clinics
Emergency clinics can be really helpful and they usually operate outside ordinary veterinary hours. They specialize in emergencies only so they usually will not accept regular check ups or spaying and neutering services.
Exotic Clinics
Exotic clinics specialize in exotic animals such as reptiles, spiders, snakes and even some small rodents, birds or ferrets. Basically, anything that isn't a cat or a dog they will treat.
Avian Clinics
These clinics aren't as common but if you can find one, they specialize in bird care and are the best places to register if you have a pet bird of any kind. There aren't many veterinary surgeries dedicated to one particular breed but it would be ideal.
Cat Only Clinics
These clinics obviously specialize in the treatment of cats. Iit would be best to sign up with them if you have a pet cat, as they will have better knowledge than an ordinary veterinarian.
Mobile Practices
There are some veterinarians who will come to see your pet. This is ideal if your pet cannot be moved for any reason. It also cuts out the stress of traveling which could make a sick animal even worse. Mobile practices are just like veterinarians who travel to farms to treat sick cattle. They treat small animals.

What factors decide the best vet for your pet?

There are several factors that you should consider before choosing the right vet for you. These include:
  • Are the appointment times convenient?
  • How does the surgeon handle emergencies during business hours?
  • Do they offer an emergency service outside normal hours?
  • How long does it take to get an ordinary appointment compared to a sick animal?
  • How friendly is the staff?
  • Can you see a specific veterinarian in a multi practice?
All of the above are important factors in deciding the surgery.

The best way to find out about the surgery is to see what other people say about their experiences with them. If there are any free veterinarians, you may also be able to speak with them to see if they can answer your questions. You should never register with a vet if you do not feel comfortable with them.

The qualifications of a vet are an important question to ask as you need to know how capable they are going to be. An important question you may have is 'will my vet see me in an emergency?' You should be given any information that you need when you register with them but if you don't, it is always better to ask them anything you are unsure.

First impressions are everything so if on your first visit the staff isn't friendly and helpful; chances are that you shouldn't sign up with them. You don't want to end up with snotty staff when your pets are ill.
How Can I Find The Right Veterinarian For Me?
You can find veterinarians in your area in the following places:
  • In the Yellow Pages and other local directories
  • Word Of Mouth
  • Online
Places such as the yellow pages and other local directories are great ways to find veterinary clinics. The listings are generally close to you and there are usually one or two pages, with different kinds of surgeries.

You may also hear about veterinary clinics from word of mouth, for example, relatives or friends who have already registered with a clinic. They are a great source of finding out all the information. You can also find an online vet.

All in all there are many different clinics out there that are available to you. You just need to make sure that you register with the one that is right for you. Make sure you are happy with the veterinarian advice and the politeness of the staff before even considering registering with a clinic.
