Micro-Chipping - The Global Positioning System for your pet

Unfortunately pet theft is quite common these days, and thousands of animal are stolen from their owners each year. For years nothing could be done
except putting out notices asking for your pet back, or ringing the local animal shelters. Now there is a pet microchip identification that enables your pet to be identified no matter where they are.

What Is a Microchip and how does it Work?

A microchip is a small, rice shaped transponder that has a unique number embedded in it. It is inserted into the animal's skin with a needle, usually between the shoulder blades, by a vet. The number can be read at a certain frequency and is picked up using a special hand-held scanner. Once identified, the number links directly to a database which brings up details of the owner and their address and contact details. Vets, animal shelters and emergency clinics, all have scanners to identify any lost or stolen pets.

Many people worry that the procedure to insert the microchip will hurt their animal. However it is relatively painless.

Why Is It Important To Micro Chip Your Pet?

A pet microchip is an essential tool in preventing your pet from becoming lost or stolen. Animals, especially cats and dogs, have a tendency to wander off if unsupervised and it is extremely easy to lose your pet or to have him/her stolen. Since animal shelters and veterinary clinics have scanners to identify micro chipped animals, it is likely that if you do lose your pet, it will be returned to you quickly.

If you suspect your pet to be stolen and you spot somebody with an animal that looks just like yours, you can prove whether it is or not with a scan. The police can assist you in being able to do this in case the person is reluctant to help you.

How Reliable Is A Microchip Compared to a Tattoo or an ID Tag?

Microchip pets are generally safer than pets with an ID Tag because ID Tags can easily fall off whereas a microchip is embedded into the skin. It would be extremely easy for a thief to take the tag off whereas there is no way of taking off a microchip.

Tattoos may be permanent and many people prefer to use them because they can be read by anybody, no matter where the animal is. It is visible and it is done just inside the ear so that owners can still show their dogs. The procedure takes around fifteen minutes and is done using a needle. Many people believe that tattoos are inhumane and that they should never be used. Microchips don't hurt the animal, whereas tattoos do.

Overall, micro-chipping is a lot safer, less painful and reliable than other identity tools.

How Long Does A Microchip Last?

Once micro chipped, it usually operates for around 25 years as it has no battery, moving parts or power supply. The generally last for the whole of the animal's life.

The microchip is placed between the shoulder blades and a thin layer of connective tissue grows around it which firmly holds it in place. It will never be passed through the animal's body.

Where Can I Get My Pet Micro-chipped and how much will it Cost?

Microchips for pets can be bought online though it is always safer and more humane for the animal, if you take them to the veterinary clinic to have it done. They do it within one minute and it is quick and painless for the animal.

Some animal shelters also offer micro-chipping.

Prices do vary though around $30-$80 and there a manufacturers charge of $12-$20. Animal shelters are more than likely to offer the service cheaper than a veterinary clinic so it is always worth looking around if you are short of money.

Is It Possible To Change The Details On The Microchip?

It is possible to change the details on the microchip and you should receive details of this when you have the procedure done. You should always contact the required place (as given on your details) whenever you change address or contact number.

Being able to change the contact details is also vital if you plan on selling your animal for any reason.

Is There a Way of Letting People Know My Animal Is Micro-chipped?

You can purchase a tag which has a 0800 number as it allows people to see that the animal is micro chipped. All they have to do is to take the dog to an animal shelter.

Overall, pet microchip identification is the best way to protect your dog against theft and from getting lost. It doesn't cost much and it really does ensure that you are able to get your animal back quickly and safely if anything should ever happen.
