Dog Breeds for a better upbringing

Deciding to purchase a dog is the easy part, the hardest part is choosing a dog breed. There are over different breeds. Each has its own character traits, and needs.
you should be able to find one that is right for you with the help of dog breed information.

Popular Dog Breeds

Although there are different kinds of dog breeds, there are a few of them that are more popular than others. The following are breeds which many people own and love:
  • Labrador retrievers
  • Golden Retrievers
  • Yorkshire Terriers
  • German Shepherd Dogs
  • Beagles
  • Dachshunds
  • Boxer Dogs
  • Poodles
  • Shih Tzu
  • Miniature Schnauzers
Labradors have been the most popular breed of dog in America for fifteen years with over 100,000 people owning one. The Golden Retriever also holds a high rank with people. Although some of the top dogs are a larger size, the popularity of smaller dogs is also growing. Dachshunds, Yorkshire Terriers and even Chihuahua's are popular.

Choosing the Right Breed

In order to choose the right breed, you need to consider the following factors:
  • How much space do you have?
  • Do you want something large or something small?
  • How much exercise can you provide to the dog?
  • How much time can you spend grooming the dog?
  • What will be the dog's purpose in the house?
  • Do you want a pure breed or a mixed breed?
Dog breed books can generally help to narrow the search down, as they list all breeds and their character traits. If you know you want a breed that can protect your home, you can go through the book and find a breed with the attribute 'protective' and so on.

There are certain breeds that are renowned for certain attributes, such as the German shepherd, which is renowned for being a guard dog and a loyal dog. The Labrador is renowned for being gentle and the Saint Bernard is renowned for rescuing people and carrying a barrel with alcohol around their necks. Doberman is known as police dog. As a matter of fact the police and armed maintain their own squad of Doberman so as to help them in detecting bombs, sniffing certain elements to corroborate evidences and track the crime its nature and so on. A bull dog is known for the ferocious nature. Various hunter breeds are known to assist you in hunting animals in the forests.

If you don't have a lot of space in your house, a Saint Bernard should not be the best choice. So it would be better to choose something smaller such as a poodle or a Chihuahua. There should be a garden attached to your house where the dog can relieve itself.

You should also consider how much exercise you can provide for the dog. Many breeds such as spaniels or terriers are energetic. So they would need frequent exercise throughout the day, and they also couldn't be left at home alone for long periods.

Grooming your dog should be done every day, though with some short haired breeds you may be able to get away by doing it once in a couple of days. It all depends on how much grooming your dog does. Breeds such as the Samoyed, require to be groomed frequently. On the other hand, breeds such as the Border Terrier, don't require to be groomed quite often.

Dogs can be quite expensive to keep, especially if they have an accident. Before committing yourself, you need to be sure that you can afford your dogs needs. You need to spend a lot for their annual jabs to think about, and the jabs your puppy needs in the first few months of his/her life. Depending on the size of your dog, you can choose weekly food. Similarly you must also invest substantially for initial cost of a collar, lead and food and water bowls. If you want to protect your pet from thieves you may want to think about getting your pet micro chipped. You must also decide if you want your pet your pet spayed or neutered. Everything adds up and vet bills can be really expensive if anything happens. so it is always worth having some extra money saved away.

There are many pure bred dogs available. There are also many different mixed breeds to choose from. Most of these can be found at animal shelters though there are some breeders who have mixed breed puppies through pure accident.

There is a lot to consider when choosing a dog breed and there is no such thing as doing too much research on your chosen breed before you buy. Whatever breed you choose you need to give the necessary care and as well as see to that you are rectifying every minute problem faced by your pet.
